Jane Hubbard is Director of HR for Chester Zoo a leading conservation and education charity, and an amazing, award-winning visitor attraction. She is responsible for delivering the Zoo’s people strategy which includes recruiting and engaging a team of passionate, talented, enthusiastic and expert people, doing everything they can to keep the zoo going, from feeding the animals to discovering new conservation ideas, and giving 1.9 million visitors an inspirational day out.
Jane has over 25 years ‘hands on’ experience covering public, private and not for profit sectors. In the NHS and the DWP she worked on Process Improvement Projects which lead to her solutions being adopted as the national rollout model.
In Royal Mail she successfully managed to integrate 24 separate business units into one national shared HR service centre taking the headcount down from 2,400 to 1,700 no mean feat against a backdrop of quite turbulent union unrest. To her credit her change model was later adopted by the main Post Office businesses and lead to the formation of a national change management team.
In less than 3 years at Chester Zoo Jane has increased the permanent headcount by 22% and the seasonal headcount by 44%. She has rolled out a new set of people values and an Effective Leadership Programme (ELP) delivered from Supervisor right up to Director level. The Chester Zoo ELP has since been accredited by BIAZA (British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquariums) and is rightly very proud of the accolade as it firmly acknowledges the commitment the zoo have to developing their staff.
