Opening keynote: Work values – changing perspectives and cross-cultural differences

Work values are central to employee motivation and job performance. But there have been very diverse scenarios of the long-term trends in values – ranging from a decline in work values to their renewal. The apparent contradictions in the evidence, however, reflect a failure to distinguish between quite different dimensions of values. The presentation will begin with an overview of the developing debate about work values. It will then consider in more detail research into specific aspects of work values – job involvement and work engagement – that reflect the value people attach to their current work roles and task activities. It will draw on new cross-national evidence that examines the differences in the strength and determinants of these values among employees in different parts of Europe. It will conclude by considering the relevance of some of the findings of this research for employer policies.
