Emma Smythe, Former Head of Learning, BAE Systems

After graduating from university with a degree in Law, Emma spent 2 years working and living in France and Italy as an Overseas Area Manager for UK travel company, Eurocamp. She then joined PepsiCo International as an Operations Manager with responsibility for two UK warehousing and transport sites. Her next role with PepsiCo was Organisational Capability Manager in Manufacturing – initially for Walkers Snacks, and then also Quaker Oats and the UK Tropicana and Copella businesses. In this role Emma received a Highly Commended National Training Award for her contribution to the successful start-up of a new Manufacturing facility in the UK. In 2010, Emma was appointed Learning & Development Manager for Europe. In 2013 Emma moved to BP as Global Capability Manager with ownership of leadership development for the Senior Leader population worldwide.

Emma joined BAE Systems in 2015 as Head of Learning, leading a newly created Centre of Expertise team, to provide the strategic direction for Learning to deliver the capability development required for the business to deliver its strategic goals. Emma sees leadership as both a privilege and a responsibility; primarily to create an environment where every employee can truly thrive – to deliver great results for their business as well as a fulfilling life and career for themselves.
