Greg Jackson CBE
Founder and CEO, Octopus Energy
Greg Jackson is the founder and CEO of Octopus Energy Group, the UK's largest domestic energy supplier and a global energy and technology company that is pioneering the affordable, green energy system of the future. In just a decade, Octopus has grown to become the UK’s largest and most awarded energy supplier, and is a by-word for positive, customer-focused market disruption and relentless innovation. Greg has built two tech giants valued in the billions of dollars – Octopus Energy and Kraken – a feat almost unheard of amongst UK entrepreneurs.
Octopus serves over 11million customers around the world, including 8million in the UK, with rapidly expanding retail operations across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the US, and Japan. Operating across 27 countries, the Group manages a £8.5billion renewables portfolio. Octopus has grown rapidly by providing reliability and humanity. It is known for putting customers, colleagues and planet first, developing a widely-admired company culture with an approachable, human face. The company constantly innovates, but retains its customer-first mission. It combines customer experience and sustainability, introducing new products including domestic heat pumps, batteries, EV financing and tariffs that combine customer demand with environmental responsibility. The company is the UK’s largest heat pump installer, runs the biggest EV-only leasing business, and powers Octopus Electroverse, Europe’s largest EV charging network with access to over 1.4million charge points worldwide. As Greg articulates Octopus’s goal: "Our role is simple. We will bring about a sustainable global energy system faster and cheaper through technology."
Before starting Octopus, Greg was a serial technology entrepreneur. After leaving school at 16 to write video games, he returned to education and studied economics at Cambridge University. He joined Procter & Gamble's graduate scheme before leading and turning around a succession of businesses throughout his twenties. He invested in a series of technology startups, including Consultant Connect, a platform for online calls between NHS
patients and consultants that dramatically reduced waiting times and demonstrated his drive to apply user-first principles to solve market inefficiencies and improve customer experience.
Alongside Octopus, Greg also founded Kraken Technologies, a green energy technology platform he led until being recently spun out of the Octopus Energy Group at a valuation of over $8.5billion. Kraken powers utilities companies globally, including Octopus, serving over 70million accounts across four continents, spanning energy, broadband and water sectors.
Greg considers how technology and customer-first thinking can disrupt established markets and unlock growth across sectors. He addresses the energy transition, examining how business innovation and customer demand can accelerate the shift to affordable, sustainable energy systems and the potential that can unlock. He also explores strategy and implementation in scaling technology businesses, building customer-centric organisations, and the role of business in solving societal issues. His perspective challenges conventional thinking, asking what customers need rather than accepting infrastructure-led constraints.
A thought leader in both innovation, business growth and the energy transition, Greg was named a TIME 100 Climate Leader, is an active angel investor in a range of startups, and serves as a non-executive board member of the Cabinet Office.
