Director, Films Not Words

Manchester-based Producer/ Director Helen Tither has worked in TV documentaries for 14 years, winning a BAFTA in 2012 for her work on CBBC documentary My Life: Me, My Dad & His Kidney, and working on major series including Educating Yorkshire and 24 Hours in A&E.

Helen has written, produced and directed three of her own documentaries for the BBC including Emmeline Pankhurst: The Making of a Militant (BBC1) which was the first documentary to tell the story of the Suffragette icon's early life and was played at the unveiling of the Emmeline statue in Manchester.

In 2023 Helen founded independent production company Films Not Words to create more opportunities for women's stories on screen and encourage better representation behind the camera.  Their first film The Corinthians: We Were The Champions - telling the story of the finest female team time forgot - is now in production and has already received the backing of the National Football Museum. 

Prior to her career in TV, Helen spent nine years as a reporter and Women's Editor at the Manchester Evening News.
